If you live in a place that permits it, having your own chickens is best. Just 1-2 chickens can usually lay enough eggs for an average household; get 4-6 chickens and you can give eggs away to friends and neighbors or even sell them. They are easy to care for. In addition to eating grain, the chickens enjoy eating about anything, so all cooking and table scraps can be feed to them, which keeps those wastes from being put in the trash or down the disposal. And if you like to garden, chicken poop is great to mix in the composting bin.
