As many of the regulars to this site probably already know. I've moved my family from Chicago to New Hampshire. We bought an old Cape Cod that needed some work, especially in the area of energy efficiency. The previous owner was using 1800 gallons of heating oil per year and at least two full cords of wood, probably more to heat the house. I've been taking pictures along the way and will post what I've done and the progress I've made once I get a little more settled in.

Here's the post about the approach I'm taking:
http://www.greenerpeople.com/forum/g...effecient.html

We've also applied for an energy efficiency program through the local utility that starts with a discounted home energy audit and I plan on posting about our experience with the program if we get in.

And finally, here's a pic of the new house.

I was just reading about the Google Power Meter project. Basically it allows you to see your energy consumption using meters on your appliances in near real time. The idea is that if you can measure your power consumption and see how and when you are using the most power then you have the ability to make small changes that can greatly reduce your power consumption. Google Power Meter Information

I've been seeing more and more sites with green seals on them. I used to own a web hosting company and don't really buy into the whole notion of green web hosting. What most of them do is buy renewable energy credits or carbon offsets to account for the power consumed by the servers that they are selling green web hosting space on.

That's great but the problem with this is that the power consumption of that that server actually only accounts for a very, very small portion of the power consumed by a web hosting company. There's networking equipment, backup servers, heating and cooling the data center, lighting the data center, the computers and servers used to monitor the data center, backup generators and the list goes on...

At one time I was buying renewable energy credits for myself, my family and my employees business and personal activities. I'm a little skeptical as to how much this actually helps the environment.

I thought this was pretty cool. A group of gardeners the that take over urban places to do their gardening. Our cities would look a lot nicer if there were more people doing this. And the added vegetation probably help filter some of the pollutants out of the air and water.

Here's the link: http://www.guerrillagardening.org/

This site has a great tag line, "real food, real farmers, real community" and they a locator for find local farmers and farmers markets in your area.
Here's the link: http://www.localharvest.org/
I find a lot of great sites and info on Stumble Upon. You can find me on SU at: http://greenerpeople.stumbleupon.com/

The biggest things I could use help with:

writing articles/tips/news/etc.

ideas for the site

forum moderators/leaders

Anyone interested?
