What does green mean to you?

Posted 06-17-2010 at 09:21 AM by zach

This is a new video by earthsense - Strength in Numbers asking people what green means to them. It's interesting to hear what other people think of as green and how completely different each persons view is.

My new house. = My new energy efficiency project.

Posted 03-25-2010 at 08:15 AM by zach

As many of the regulars to this site probably already know. I've moved my family from Chicago to New Hampshire. We bought an old Cape Cod that needed some work, especially in the area of energy efficiency. The previous owner was using 1800 gallons of heating oil per year and at least two full cords of wood, probably more to heat the house. I've been taking pictures along the way and will post what I've done and the progress I've made once I get a little more settled in.

Here's the post about the approach I'm taking:

We've also applied for an energy efficiency program through the local utility that starts...

Google Power Meter Project

Posted 04-14-2009 at 11:45 AM by zach

I was just reading about the Google Power Meter project. Basically it allows you to see your energy consumption using meters on your appliances in near real time. The idea is that if you can measure your power consumption and see how and when you are using the most power then you have the ability to make small changes that can greatly reduce your power consumption. That's great but the problem with this is that the power consumption of that that server actually only accounts for a very, very small portion of the power consumed by a web hosting company. There's networking equipment, backup servers, heating and cooling the data center, lighting the data center,

I thought this was pretty cool. A group of gardeners the that take over urban places to do their gardening. Our cities would look a lot nicer if there were more people doing this. And the added vegetation probably help filter some of the pollutants out of the air and water.

Here's the link: http://www.guerrillagardening.org/

This site has a great tag line, "real food, real farmers, real community" and they a locator for find local farmers and farmers markets in your area.
