Default The Great Debate

I've been in a debate with my good friend (an eco-blogger) regarding the prioritizing of sustainable products.

Let me pose a hypothetical scenario to you:

You are at the store, and you're looking to buy... An eggplant.

Your choices are:
  • Locally, independently grown Eggplant from a farm town about 80 miles away from you.
  • Organic eggplant distributed by a corporate distributor, cheapest of the three.
  • Organic eggplant grown via sustainable farming, location unknown.

Which do you choose? Which is the most beneficial to the environment, immediately, as well as going forward?

Lets answer this 1, 2 and 3.

1 Best of the 3. If you really have info that is where it comes from...
2 what do you know about the eggplant? corp??? Only cares about???
3 If locdation is unknown, then you have NO information any thing else. about this egg plant Can not be. How could u???

I did a poll on a very similar question last year using eggs as an example.
http://www.greenerpeople.com/forum/g...s-greener.html (Which is Greener?)

94% said the local farmer's market eggs.

The packaging on some of the sustainably grown/organic products at the supermarket just kills me...

Oh, that's awesome! I'm glad that local farmers won out. Sorry about the dupe thread!

The packaging is INSANE! It's as though companies only want to do one thing to make themselves eco-friendly, i.e. as little as possible!

I hate to say this, but I'm probably going to go with the most economical choice.
I've personally never had a major problem with products like Miracle Gro and so on. I almost feel like they DO serve some sort of purpose and that's to grow more food.

When it comes to going green for me, I think energy conversation and things that are not extremely harmful to the planet. Now, Miracle Gro may not be the best option for a clean product to use on plants, but its main purpose is more of a societal one.

Do you mean "societal" as in "for the betterment of society"? As in higher yields feed more people? (Just curious. )

You got it, Living!
I mean, I haven't read TOO much on the pros and cons of Miracle Gro or Non-Organic produce (I'm a green novice and I am naive about somet things), but I've often wondered if we could set aside our prejudices against pesticides and preservatives to help feed people. I understand that many of them are horrible for your body, but I guess I hate to see people struggle to put cheap and somewhat healthy food on the table.

This is definitely something to be thought about. I can't help but wonder what happens to all the food that spoils in our fancy grocery stores, and why we couldn't give that cheap, non-organic food to people who can't afford it/can't acquire it.

But then the other side - the harmful pesticides, etc. - make it difficult for us to continue our agricultural aspirations because of the way they affect the Earth. It's definitely an issue!
