Default Four Easy Steps to Cleaning Greener

We all want a clean home, of course. But, it is really important to choose the right green cleaning products for your home. After all, you don’t want to use harsh, harmful chemicals that will leave toxic odors and residues in your home for you and your family and pets to deal with. So, here are four simple guidelines to use when choosing green cleaning products for your castle (or, home, if you prefer to be modest!):
    1. Avoid products that contain chlorine and ammonia. Chlorine can compromise indoor air quality, and you definitely don’t want that for your home. Ammonia has a similar effect because it also turns into a gas; it is known to irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and can even cause death with too much exposure.
    2. Choose plant-based, biodegradable soaps and detergents.
    3. Go for all-purpose and surface cleaners that have plant-based solvents.
    4. Stay away from products that don’t disclose the ingredients on the product label (or even if you can’t pronounce the names of the ingredients they do list).

    1. Recycle: Not a new concept and something the entire family can do. Everything on this earth is ours to take care of ..including what we do with our trash. Anything that can be recycled or reused is not going to be polluting our water sources or taking up space on a landfill.
    2. Paper or Plastic? I read that 12 millions barrels of oil were used to make 885 Billion plastic bags in 2012. And that it takes four times the energy to make paper bags versus plastic. And in order to save the trees, many switched over to plastic. So now we have another problem. Plastic bags do not biodegrade, they just break down into small pieces that contaminate our land, water and kill hundred’s of thousand marine animals each year that have ingested these small pieces of plastic. A better alternative would be to use Reusable Shopping Bags that can be bought for a $1.00 and are made of cotton or nylon. Some stores, like Whole Foods, give you credit on your bill or give credit to a charity each time you use these bags.
    3. Reusable Water Bottles: Not only does the plastic not biodegrade, but 95% of plastics have harmful chemicals in them that can leach into the liquid or whatever we put in the plastic container. A good alternative would be to use reusable stainless steel or aluminum water bottles.
    4. Save your hands, save water and save money. Running a fully loaded dishwasher saves up to 10-20 gallons of water a day versus handwashing. So no more dish pan hands for this gal!
