Question Which is Greener?

I don't think anything is ever completely black and white and there are always trade offs but I would have to say the the eggs from the farmers market are greenest and easiest on the wallet. They traveled less distance to get to my refrigerator and weren't grown in some monstrous supposedly cage free facility in not so humane ways. Even though they aren't certified organic they probably are organic and they are probably treated better than the supposedly "cage free" chickens that live on factory farms. No to mention the reusable packaging.

It bugs me when companies try to market their products as green and/or organic so they can charge a premium and then wrap their product in 3 layers of plastic and ship it halfway across the country.

Support local goods! They are much more sustainable because they needs much less transportation and for seasoning food, they do not need pesticides! Good for us as well!

Buying at local farm is still the best, like the friend said it involve less resources, and support obviously the local economy.

If you live in a place that permits it, having your own chickens is best. Just 1-2 chickens can usually lay enough eggs for an average household; get 4-6 chickens and you can give eggs away to friends and neighbors or even sell them. They are easy to care for. In addition to eating grain, the chickens enjoy eating about anything, so all cooking and table scraps can be feed to them, which keeps those wastes from being put in the trash or down the disposal. And if you like to garden, chicken poop is great to mix in the composting bin.

We buy from a local farm market. We either reuse the cardboard carton or recycle it right away. Sometimes our local churches ask for them to reuse for Sunday School crafts as well.

Find a neighbour who has chickens. We get our eggs from a friend and they are so much better than anything you have ever tasted. The children want boiled eggs for lunch everyday!
