Thread: Out with the plastic baggies!

Default Out with the plastic baggies!

I'm working on a class project that involves designing and creating a product to sell. We will actually hold a one day sale at our university to sell our unique wares. I want to focus on an eco-friendly product, specifically reusable sandwich bags (in other words non-wasteful ziploc baggies). I am aware that there are many on the market, but I was wondering if anyone can suggest improvements to them. Also, how much would you be willing to spend on one? A pack of three?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Easy to turn inside-out so they can be washed as easily. It can get messy in there from the cheese or the PB & J.. .

Thanks, Shiela! That was a very important point I hadn't thought of yet. It gave me some good ideas.

I agree with shiela_robins with the need to be easily cleaned. Having a specially designed rack to be used in a dishwasher would be nice too. The other thing is they need to be durable. Most bags don't last long before they start splitting/tearing.

Personally, I've found that the inexpensive plastic storage containers work great. What I would really like is more options that are not plastic.

I agree with you gludeman the palstic containers like tupperware are a much better choice than plastic bags. The containers are machine washable and last for years.

As for the second sentance of the quote. There may be a break coming in the very near future. A small company in California is working on a new plastic that is made from renewable cotton and castor oil instead of the petroleum based plastic we use everyday now.

This plastic is being developed for the solar PV industry to use as a backing sheet is solar panels. But, if this produuct is strong enough and durable enough to be used as a backing sheet it should be easly adaptable for many other existing plastic applications. They started preproduction runs of backsheet in Sept or Nov of 2009 and should be very near production now.

My wife has been using reusable sandwich bags for more than a year now and it works better than the plastic bags. We have been recommending reusable bags to our family and friends and they too are satisfied with it.

Tiffin's are stainless steel stacks of dishes that are used in India to collect take away food, they can then be washed and reused. You could take a concept such as this and then adapt it for sandwiches. At the restaurant I work in we use Tiffin's and people in the UK love the novel idea of them. They're cute as well.
